Imaging Services

Shore Health System's Imaging Services offers both traditional and contemporary imaging services to help you and your physician manage your health care. The Department's picture archival and communications system (PACS) enables our radiologists, primary care doctors and specialists to view and manage all diagnostic digital images instantly from wherever they are through a secure Internet connection - which means quicker diagnosis, consultation and intervention for you, the patient.

Imaging Procedures/ Services

Traditional tests include basic diagnostic radiography (standard x-rays), fluoroscopy (x-rays that show internal organs in motion on a monitor), nuclear medicine (using small amounts of radioactive substances to view parts of the body with a gamma camera) and ultrasound (using high frequency sound waves to create images of organs in the body).

Contemporary testing services include the following.

Computerized Tomography is a quick, non-invasive test that uses x-rays to capture images in sections as it moves around the body. A computer reassembles the image "slices" to produce clear and detailed images of the scanned area in a matter of seconds. The more slices a CT scanner can produce, the more information that can be captured. Shore Health System has three 16-slice scanners used for examining everything from strokes, acute brain and some spleen and pelvic injuries, to investigating unexplained chest, abdomen and pelvic symptoms.

CTA stands for computerized tomographic angiography and is a test that combines a conventional CT scan with the technique of angiography to create images of blood vessels in the body. Physicians may order a CTA to help diagnose a narrowing or blockage of arteries, an aneurysm, a pulmonary embolism or other vascular condition.

Advanced software enables the scanner to also be used for cardiac calcium scoring and imaging of the entire vascular system, possibly reducing the need for some other diagnostic procedures. Click here for exam preparation.

Magnetic Resonance Imaging is a non-invasive test that uses radio waves and a strong magnetic field to create computer-generated images of the body's various tissues. MRI is especially useful in diagnosing spine and joint problems, injuries to ligaments and muscles, and certain tumors and disorders in the abdomen and chest. It can even help spot a stroke in its early stages.Click here for exam preparation.

Interventional Radiology is a specialty of radiology in which radiologists use a variety of radiology tests, such as CT or MRI, to guide the insertion of small instruments and tools through the body to identify, treat and manage a medical disorder without requiring conventional surgery. These medical disorders include kidney disease, digestive tract ailments and some cancers. Radiologists can also work with other physicians to position stents and grafts in patients with peripheral vascular disease, avoiding possible surgery, as well as provide Uterine Fibroid Embolization (UFE), blocking off the arteries that "feed" a fibroid tumor so it will shrink. Your physician will provide you with instructions.

Breast Imaging and Intervention
Shore Health System offers a broad scope of services for diagnosing, staging and treating breast disease in partnership with the Shore Regional Breast Center and the Shore Regional Cancer Center. Digital mammograms, which are non-invasive radiological examinations, remain the mainstay of screening for early breast cancer (Click here for mammography exam preparation). These can be used in conjunction with other tools, depending on test results. These include: CAD (computer aided detection), breast ultrasound, fine needle aspiration, biopsy, stereotactic breast biopsy, needle localization, sentinel node localization and breast MRI. Bone Mineral Density
Bone Mineral Density (BMD) screening measures BMD in the spine, both hips and a forearm using a form of x-ray. Results are compared to normal bone in a patient of the same age and gender to determine bone loss. BMD testing can indicate risk of getting a fracture. Initially performed to diagnose osteoporosis for women, BMD screening is now also used in men and children who may be experiencing bone loss as the result of disease, eating disorders or certain medications. While CT and PET scans are used individually for a variety of diagnostic options, the highly defined, 3-D images they provide can also be used together to closely pinpoint exact locations in the body. Information from the PET scan is matched up with anatomical landmarks on the CT scan to help stage a disease more accurately for treatment planning in treating conditions such as cancer and heart disease.
